Alela Diane and the Headless Heroes
I have been a fan of Alela Diane for a few years now but only recently discovered that she got involved in a side project- The Headless Heroes. I discovered this in a video, “The Northwind Blew South”. The time-lapsed photography, the setting (Sydney Harbor), along and with the music was quite stunning. It was a bit of a surprise because I had never heard of this project and that Alela, a Portland resident now for several years, had been in Europe promoting it.
I was fortunate enough to have seen and heard Alela here in Portland a couple of years back when she released her first full length album, A Pirate’s Gospel with her friend Laura Gibson, another emerging Portland artist. It was an intimate setting in which Alela and Laura and about 50 fans were all assembled atop a cathedral in an old church on a rainy Portland night to listen to an acoustical performance from each. It was a perfect setting to hear these two sweet ladies voices. I think the amp for Laura’s set was dead so we ended up hearing an a cappella performance which was even sweeter. Afterwards I spoke to Alela, got an autographed copy of the album and even a homemade cookie she had baked for the occasion.
So, to catch everyone up, Alela has released an album under a side project called, Headless Heroes, which will finally be released in the US in May titled, The Silence of Love. It was released in Europe and the UK last year. It features the collaborative efforts of Alela Diane on vocals along with Eddie Bezalel and Hugo Nicolson, who put together the project, finding Diane via her Myspace page. Coincidentally, that is how I found Alela a few years ago and shared her music with a friend and we have followed her since. This is a really interesting covers album. ‘The Silence of Love’ has some truly great interpretations, ranging from tracks by Daniel Johnston, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Vashti Bunyan, and even The Jesus & Mary Chain’s, “Just Like Honey” which you can check out below.
