Laura Gibson- Poetry in Motion
I was treated the other night to a NW Music tripleheader with a ticket that included Leonard Mynx (Portland, OR), Laura Gibson (Portland, OR), and Damien Jurado (Seattle, WA).
I had met Laura earlier on in her career at a very informal affair at an old church in Portland with another local emerging female indie artist, Alela Diane. They had teamed up to give a handful of fans a free offering of an acoustic performance in the upper level of this “funky” church on a cold and wet night in Portland. Something was ”awry” as Alela’s song would indicate when Laura’s amp went south so she sang a capella which was really fitting for her musical style. Laura has a way about her vocals that is stark with a slight tremble in her voice but very steady and ever so sweet. Laura’s style grows fonder the more you hear her sing. It is powerful in it’s own subtle way. You could say it seeps into you like a good poem. Laura has been working hard on her craft and it shows since I last saw her perform in the old church. Her new album, Beasts of Seasons is full of great songs. Some of my favorite songs off the new album are the hit single, “The Funeral”, where you can hear a saw being played and again, Laura’s minmalistic vocals are the highlight. Other favorites are “Glory”, “Hands in Pockets”, and “Where Have All The Good Words Gone?”.
I might add that Laura looked particularly stunning in her own Pocahanas style dress and boots with her long blonde hair in thick braids the other night. Watch, listen and enjoy!
