Sonic Youth is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Mark Ibold (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums).
In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, Sonic Youth was pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement.

The Runaway-The National (new)
I can’t wait to hear more of their gorgeous and eloquent new music. They are scheduled to perform in this year’s Pitchfork Festival
PBJ’s lastest video from their album, Living Thing’s song, “Nothing To Worry About”, has a new video. To be honest, as much as I enjoyed their single, “Young Folks”, thier full length albums have not been on my radar or review previously. However, I was fairly impressed with their SXSW 2009 performance of “Nothing To Worry About”. Today I saw a posting on the musicslut blog of thier new video of the same song which in turn sent me on a search for more of their latest on Living Thing. See the glowing review from the musicslut here of their performance at Webster Hall. It appears their live performance and perhaps this latest album is one you might want to check out further.
Live at SXSW 09
Iggy Pop’s new album, Preliminaires, is now streaming on his myspace and is scheduled for release in the US on June 2nd. You will be surprised to find that this album is nothing like his previous albums. He has taken a new direction with his solo work since the classic Stooges guitar driven rock songs to Parisian jazz. Iggy claims his inspiration from a novel by Michael Houellebecq I am not keen on jazz per se but I like this new direction for him and think it’s a good change for him. Iggy’s low voice mixed with the sounds of the jazz instruments, horns etc. work together nicely.
