Twilight 2 : New Moon.. wow, some major hype has been surrounding this the second in a probable longer series of Twilight movies.. as well there was an all-star Indie band effort in laying tracks for the OST for New Moon. Some bands seem to hit the headlines early, for example DCFC and The Editors. Others, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, perhaps got lost in the shuffle. Their track, “Done All Wrong” was track 9 in the 15-track compilation sandwiched right between a sweet duet with Bon Iver and St. Vincent and a relatively obscure track, “Monsters” written and recorded under the moniker of Hurricane Bells, aka Steve Schiltz of Longwave’s side project. “Monsters” was not even slated for his, presently unreleased, debut album.

Just after the New Moon premiered, BRMC, released a live CD/DVD pack of various tracks spanning their entire career (plus a romping cover of the Pogues’ “Dirty Old Town” unavailable elsewhere), recorded in Berlin, Dublin and Glasgow, and mixed by BRMC’s own Peter Hayes.

And, if that isn’t enough, they just unveiled that the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is set to release their fifth studio album, Beat The Devil’s Tattoo, on March 8th. Of note, the band wrote and recorded most of the album at The Basement Studio in Philadelphia, PA – the same room where they wrote and recorded “Howl” as well as some work in their hometown Los Angeles. Beat The Devil’s Tattoo also marks the first album with drummer Leah Shapiro.

BRMC will also embark on a North American headline tour upon release, kicking off February 26 in Sacramento and culminating at New York City’s Webster Hall on April 8.

Recently the band supported an effort to stop human trafficking in San Diego, CA. and covered Bob Dylan’s “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll”.

We’ve covered her before here at YATM, and in following the direction of her career, we knew she was headed for great things to come. A multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter, Bertie’s emergence on the music scene has been anything but ordinary. The daughter of iconic artist Charles Blackman, her first encounter with artistry came as a child on the floor of her mother and father’s paint strewn studio. She fell in love with music at 6, self-taught on guitar and keys by 14; discovered her gift for song-writing by 15, and rapidly emerged into the exquisite talent she is today.

Bertie was nominated and was just announced the winner the 2009 ARIA Award for best independent release for her album, ‘Secrets and Lies” this past weekend.

Its been nearly 3 years since Laura Veirs last LP, however YATM has the inside on her side project and her so called hiatus, NOT.. Let’s just say Laura doesn’t let the moss grow while she has been idling her way in the Portland community. We love her song writing and musical creative powers which we feel have never been better in her latest work, July Flame. Here are a couple of excellent examples to backup up our claims.  Colin Meloy has called the record his favorite of 2010 and Jim James of My Morning Jacket (who guests on the record) says of the album “Laura’s like the queen bee and my ear is her hive; she nests and makes honey in the hairs of my cochlea,” Here, here Colin and James!
